April - A time for change....

A number of employment legislation changes take place in April.  There are changes to a variety of financial awards including statutory sick pay, maternity, paternity and redundancy payments and  the maximum tribunal awards for unfair dismissal.

A key change sees the maximum award for compensation in unfair dismissal claims increasing from £74,200 to £76,574 (or 52 weeks' gross pay, if lower). Statutory sick pay also increases from £86.70 to £87.55 per week (payable for a maximum of 28 weeks in a 3 year period). Statutory redundancy payments, which are based on age, length of service and subject to a prescribed weekly cap, sees the weekly cap increase from £450 to £464. Statutory maternity pay increases from £136.78 to £138.18 per week. A woman on maternity leave would now typically receive 6 weeks at 90% of her salary and then the remaining 33 weeks at £138.18.

I’ve personally worked with Ortolan Legal’s managing director on a number of transactions. Their legal advice doesn’t come wrapped in multiple caveats; it takes account of the commercial realities businesses face. Technically, they are really capable and they’re also highly personable people to work with. They represent real value for money.
